Artist's Comments

Inspired by my "Spotty Performance" pic [link]

Fellow Kubies may recognize this as the "ghosting" assignment. Essentially we were supposed to draw three pages of continuity in the style of an existing artist. You may or may not see the influence of the late Mike Wieringo [link] in these pages. I tried to emulate Mike because I think he's got a great, whimsical style without a lot of pointless frills and gimmicks. It's just good art that's a joy to look at, and the art world is that much weaker for having lost him. Rest in peace, Mike.

This is the only page that I feel really got down enough of Mike's style that, to the untrained eye, it might appear to be some of Ringo's stuff. ...maybe not the first panel, but the last four for sure. The big difference was that, in the other two pages, I was referencing finished comics, whereas here I was just referencing Ringo's straight pencils. It really helped to nail his sense of design when it wasn't washed over by an inker.

I like how these turned out, especially this page. Good job!

Thanks, man. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be to copy someone else's style. So much of what I do is done instinctively, and it's hard to supress it.
